What is engraving?
Engraving cloth is a cloth on which a pattern is drawn or stamped. According to some experts, this art was introduced to Iran during the patriarchal period due to its geographical location, the Mongol invasion and the conquest of the Chenians. The peak of this art in the Safavid period was due to the interest of the Abbas aphid in this art. This art was so popular in this period that even men’s and women’s clothes were made of engraved cloth. Because Isfahan was the capital of the Safavids, the cradle of this art in Iran is the city of Isfahan. The artists of this city produce the most beautiful engraving fabrics. Most of the engraved fabrics in Isfahan are produced and marketed in the city of Khorzouk.
Materials and supplies needed for fabric engraving
1- Fabric
The first requirement is to engrave the fabric, and of course its material is very important. In this art, it should be cotton and made of cotton. Because cotton fabric accepts color better. Below we refer to the fabrics that are often used in the art of engraving:
- Natural silk fabrics, this type of fabric has been used in the past.
- Canvas fabric
- Interwoven fabric
- Malmel Haji Ali Akbari
- Cloaks and linen of external texture.
2- Template
The second tool required for engraving is stamps and molds. Over time, instead of painting on fabric, stamps are used for ease of work. These seals have embossed designs. These molds are made of wood. The type of wood must be strong and flexible. Most of these woods are from hawthorn and pear trees. And are generally used in 4 colors. The role in this art is very important. The roles used in calligraphy include the following:
- Seals and molds in the form of lovers such as Yusuf and Zulaikha, Lily and Majnoon
- Seals and molds in the form of historical landscapes such as forty columns, Shah Mosque and thirty-three bridges
- Seals and molds in the form of ancient stories such as the fox and the stork
- Seals and molds in the form of poets such as Ferdowsi, Khayyam and Hafez
- Seals and molds in the form of animals such as peacocks, elephants and camels
- Seals and molds in the form of nature, like the hunting grounds of kings
- Stamps and molds in the shape of singers and musicians
- Seals and molds in the form of flowers, bushes and Islamic.
- Miniature stamps and molds
- Seals and molds in the form of inscriptions like icons with sentences about the Imams
To make the mold, itda is transferred to the desired pub and engraved on it. Also, for ease of work, extra wood should be cut around the mold and placed behind the handle. And to prevent the mold from drying out and cracking, it is lubricated with tallow.
3-color
A very important factor that determines the value of the pen cloth is the color. We should know that the more carefully the color is chosen and the better the quality, the more valuable our engraving fabric is. It can also be said that Iranians are very skilled and capable in the art of dyeing. In engraving, 4 main colors are used: black, red, blue, green and yellow, and it should be said that other colors can be obtained from the combination of these colors. For example, brown can be obtained by combining red and black. To make the paint, first the natural material is poured on the clay side and then glycerin, tragacanth, castor oil and sesame are added. Tragacanth concentrates our dye and prevents it from spreading on the fabric. Glycerin, castor oil and sesame oil are also used to prevent the dye from drying out and sticking to the container.

Steps of engraving work
1- Washing the fabric before starting work
The first step is to wash the fabric to remove debris and fabric scum. In order for the fabric to be pea-colored, they dye it with pomegranate peel and halibut, and if they want it to be white, they spread it in the sun to make it white. Then the fabric is cut to the size of a curtain or a tablecloth.
2. Printing and stamping the pattern on the fabric
To make this table, it is necessary to make a table made of sawn timber or timber. Also, the bases of the table should be sunk 10 cm into the ground so that it does not move with impact. The cloth is spread on the table and the pen dips the seal or mold in black paint and tragacanth so that the color does not spill over. The first color for the pen is black and then the colors. Each pen seals only one color.
3. Washing the fabric and stabilizing the color
After embossing on the fabric, it is washed again to remove excess colors in the fabric. Then, to fix the color on it, they use ground pomegranate peel and ronas kernel. These materials are added to water and the fabric is boiled to stabilize the color on the fabric. At the end of the work, after the fabrics are dry, they are added to the tassel and the work is completed.
