Under glaze painting
Pottery is one of the most popular handicrafts and there are many different ways to decorate and beautify it today. One of these ways is under-glaze painting. This art is very practical and impressive. This art can be both a tasteful and personal activity for us and it can be considered as a work and a source of income for us. In this method, it is first painted on pottery and then glazed, which makes it shiny and beautiful. This art has existed in our country since the Seljuk period. It is one of the oldest methods of beautifying pottery in the world. And it can be said that in Iran, initially only blue and black colors were used for this purpose.
Steps of painting under glaze
1. Prepare the desired pottery
To do this, we must select or make the pottery we want. This pottery can be plates, vases, glasses, etc. of other pottery products. It can be said that this method can be done on both baked pottery and raw pottery, and if you are new, it is better that Paint under baked pottery. You should know that when you use raw pottery for painting under glaze, you have to put it in the oven after painting, but if the pottery we want is baked before, there is no need to re-bake it. Our pottery is naturally red because it is made of clay. If you wish, you can cover it with a thin layer of white glaze. Also, in this method, we must be very careful in baking pottery so that after finishing our glaze, there will be no needles or dots.
۲. Paint and execute the drawing design
In this method, more water color is used. You can also use your own special colors. The paint used for painting the following glaze consists of the following components:
The main ingredient in this method is piquant. Pigments in this painting method must be resistant to temperatures up to 1100 degrees. So we conclude that this method does not use paints such as acrylic. The best type of paint for this underglaze painting is mineral paints such as metal oxide, which can be called cobalt oxide.
In this method, additives are used so that there are no defects and problems in our product. This additive is called glaze powder. This material prevents the paint from settling and makes our work easier. It also makes our color stabilize in the oven after baking.
Suspender and lubricant:
It is another material so that our paint does not settle and hang for painting on pottery, and the work is done more easily. Tragacanth is a natural additive and carboxymethylcellulose powder is a chemical additive.
3. The final glaze
Finally, when the painting of our case is done, the Russian pottery is covered with glaze to make it look stronger and stronger, and it is placed in a kiln and our product is ready.
