Nitric acid, also known as acid or dandruff essence, is a very strong mineral acid with the chemical formula HNO3. Pure nitric acid is colorless, but older specimens are yellow due to their decomposition into nitrogen and water oxides. Nitric acid is soluble in water and is also a strong oxidant that is highly corrosive and toxic. It reacts with metals, oxides and hydroxides to form nitrate salts.
